Viola Frey: 2003 Exhibition

Press Release

The Rena Bransten Gallery is exhibiting new ceramic sculptures, plates, tiles, and pastel drawings by Viola Frey. In this new body of sculptures are figurine groupings of flea-market objects and monumental figures who continue to implore or confront viewers. Monumental male and female figures are often paired with enormous spheres/worlds, raising questions of global dominance and sexual power. Nude women reference classical sculptures and divine, earth-mother power. In the two-dimensional works - the wall tiles and pastels on paper - the narrative includes the artist's studio. As in the three-dimensional works, she uses color to fracture surfaces and create abstraction. Floating objects from her vast collection of flea market bric-a-brac surround nudes, figures and charachters from her personal symbolism creating mythologies of love, sex and power.

Frey received her BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and her MFA from Tulane University in New Orleans. She is a retired professor from the College of Arts and Crafts where she taught for over thirty years. Her work has been exhibited and collected by major museums internationally.
