Henry Wessel: Las Vegas
–Press Release
Henry Wessel's new color photographs focus upon Las Vegas, Nevada - where art and artifice are conjoined to seduce and entertain the tourist industry that supports the city. Images of interior decor and exterior architecture reflect an aesthetic based on an amalgamation of eclecticism and faux-finishes. Wessel's images seem to delight in the notion that nothing is orginal and everything is an "improved" version of a copy.
Wessel was born in Teaneck, NJ, received his BA from Penn State, and an MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop, NY State U at Buffalo. He has been the recipient of both NEA and Guggenheim grants, has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute for over 20 years, and is included in many major museum collections.
